Like many brands, we do our own marketing. But we also do our own manufacturing in Granton, Edinburgh.
I (Mark Pool) founded Roots Soda Co. in 2012, because I wanted healthier sodas.
Healthier sodas are made using real ingredients that are lightly processed.
Our first sodas were made on my kitchen stove. The process was very simple, because we did not want heavily processed ingredients in our sodas. Today, the process is still the same, but we now use bigger pots and pans.
We get fruit and vegetables from the local fruit market, and then we juice them.
We pass our water through three filters. This prevents off-flavours affecting the taste.
We pasteurise our ingredients in a commercial kitchen cooking pot. Each is treated according to its needs. Fruit and vegetable juices are pasteurised quickly. Herbs and spices simmer for a while.
We blend the pasteurised ingredients, for several hours, in a winery tank.
After mixing, the juice is slowly carbonated in a brewery tank for several days. We carbonate in a brewery tank, so that our bubbles are small and unobtrusive.
We package our soda in aluminium cans, because clear bottles let in harmful ultra violet rays, which cause off-flavours. Aluminium cans stop ultra violet rays. They are better for the environment too, because 75% of all aluminium cans in the UK are recycled.
